Oregon: Scandinavians, Gardens & Covered Bridges

Overview

The state's culture, beauty, and history together in one vacation

Daily Itinerary

Day 1.

Fly non-stop to Portland early this morning. The city was founded in the mid-1800's and has a fascinating history. Let's take a couple of hours and explore it on a tour, perhaps stopping for a treat along the way. Originally called "Stumptown," and named on the toss of a coin, Portland played a significant role in California's early history. You'll hear the story.

After lunch, make the drive an hour south to Silverton in the Williamette Valley, a quaint village with shops you'll want to explore. Nearby is your home, a resort with spectacular gardens. There is a restaurant at the resort and your coach will offer a shuttle into town with two return times. Oregon Garden Resort - 2 nights (L)

Day 2.

The Gordon House is a residence built in 1963, designed by influential architect Frank Lloyd Wright, now located right next to the Oregon Garden, in Silverton, Oregon. Today features a tour of the house and time in the garden. A half hour tram tour will give you an oversight of the garden, and then you can keep the map as a reminder of your visit.

In the afternoon, we offer a shuttle into town for shopping, lunch, etc. Lunch is also served at the resort. There are so many wonderful restaurants in town, we will dine together in one this evening. (FB, D)

Day 3.

90 minutes south of Silverton is the town of Cottage Grove. It's home to 6 of these old time landmarks. Enjoy a narrated tour of this piece of history, and as a special treat, enjoy lunch on one of the bridges.

Home of the Ducks, University of Oregon, Eugene is a very diverse town. Our guided tour points out highlights like the signature neighborhoods and the reason it's called "Track Town USA." The campus is featured on the tour. Your accommodations for two nights are in one of Eugene's finest hotels. The Graduate - 2 nights (FB, L)

Day 4.

Junction City doesn't sound like it would be the Scandinavian capital of Oregon. But in the early 1900's, Danish farmers were attracted to the area, and today, over 100,000 attend the annual Scandinavian Festival and the days of the event are dedicated to Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Enjoy some great food, entertainment, and festivities today as the local folks celebrate their heritage at the festival.

Back in Eugene, a visit to the Cascades Raptor Center gives you a look at 30 native species on display. This nature center and wildlife hospital specializes in birds of prey. Tonight, gather for a dinner honoring our travels together. (FB, D)

Day 5

Before our early afternoon non-stop flight back to Sacramento, we have a lesson in glass-blowing with local artists. Perhaps you will create something worth taking home with you... (FB)
