Our friends at Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) bring us one of Rogers and Hammerstein’s most beloved musicals. Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile.
Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he’s fallen in love. Lunch is included at Tofanelli’s Restaurant in nearby Grass Valley prior to the 2pm matinee.

Based on the Pulizer Prize winning novel, The Color Purple brings to the stage all the exhilaration and spirit of this prize winning story. This 2016 Tony Award winner for best Musical Revival tells the story of Celie and
takes place mostly in rural Georgia. The story focuses on the life of African-American women in the southern United States in the 1930s, addressing numerous issues that affected their lives. Despite obstacles,
Celie and her family still are able to find love and friendships all expressed through the spiritually rousing jazz, blues, gospel or ragtime music. Wednesday trips include a snack-sized box lunch, orchestra seating for the 2pm matinee, and dinner on your own at Pier 39 after the show. The Saturday trip includes lunch on your own in Union Square
before the 2pm matinee.

The Humans is the recipient of four 2016 Tony Awards including Best Play (Author, Stephen Karam), Best Featured Actress in a Play, Best Featured Actor in a Play. Stephen Karam’s The Humans is an uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family Thanksgiving dinner. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex, and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan’s deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic. Don’t miss this show as we only have this one date and there are no other matinees scheduled during its run in San Francisco. Our Saturday trip includes lunch on your own in the Union Square area, followed by the 2pm matinee. Return to Sacramento directly after the conclusion of this one-act show.

A Play on the Lake, A Ride to the Sky

Head to Lake Tahoe for a fun overnighter featuring the 1960’s musical, Beehive. An exuberant jukebox celebration of women musicians from the 60’s; Beehive transports audiences on a nostalgic musical journey. The outdoor venue at Sand Harbor is perfect for a summer night of music, laughter, and of course Aqua Net-glistening coiffures! Join your fellow Sports Leisure travelers for a late morning trip to Truckee. Check into the Hampton Inn, don your best 60’s apparel (optional) before dinner at Moody’s before enjoying the show. Imagine, this venue has one of the most stunning backdrops in the world, a Lake Tahoe sunset!
After breakfast at the hotel; depart for Olympic Valley. Squaw Valley is one of the largest ski areas in the United States, and was host site of the entire 1960 Winter Olympics. A tram ride to the summit provides an aerial view of the valley, plus takes you to High Camp for lunch. Visit the Olympic Museum before returning to Sacramento, mid-afternoon.
