Daily Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Calgary, the largest city in the western Canadian Province of Alberta. We'll head west around the city on the Trans Canada Highway and soon see the majestic peaks of the Rocky Mountains. We will drive through the scenic town of Canmore and pass through the Gates of Banff National Park. Mount Royal Hotel, Banff - 3 nights (D)
Day 2
Lake Louise - Yoho National Park
Drive along famous Bow Valley, where wildlife sightings of caribou, elk, and occasionally bears, are common. Stop for a picture of majestic Castle Mountain before passing through Lake Louise Village.
From there, make our way up the twisting roadway to world famous Lake Louise, the emerald green "Jewel of the Rockies" surrounded by glistening glaciers and towering snow-capped mountain peaks. There will be time to enjoy the lake and explore the iconic Chateau Lake Louise before heading back to the Trans-Canada Highway and crossing the Continental Divide into Yoho National Park and the province of British Columbia.
Along the way, we'll take a break for lunch before arriving at awe-inspiring Emerald Lake, filled with glacier run-off water that makes it glisten with the blue-green hue of an emerald. Before we start our journey back to Alberta, we'll stop to view the famed Natural Bridge. (FB)
Day 3
Banff - Sulphur Mt. Gondola
It's time to explore your alpine resort. Once "Siding 29" on the Canadian Pacific Railway, the town of Banff was intended to be a tourist town from its very inception. The park's first superintendent, George Stewart, even oriented the town's first street so that it offered the best possible view of Cascade Mountain. This morning, explore Banff on a sightseeing tour with stops at Cascade Gardens, the mysterious Hoodoos, the cascading Bow Falls and the Cave & Basin National Historic Site. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the shops and galleries of Banff. We'll end the day with an exciting gondola ride to the top of 7500-foot Sulphur Mountain where we'll enjoy a great dinner with a spectacular view of the townsite and Bow Valley below. (FB,D)
Day 4
Columbia Icefields Highway - Jasper
Traveling through the heart of the Canadian Rockies, drive along the famous Icefields Parkway. It boasts a unique landscape rich in history and natural beauty second to none. We'll view azure, blue Peyto Lake, Mistaya Canyon (the valley of the Grizzly Bears) and climb the switchback road through the Sunwapta Pass before arriving at the famous Columbia Icefields whose waters feed three oceans; Visit the Interpretive Centre, then have the experience of a lifetime - a ride on the Ice Explorer vehicle for a close look at the Athabasca Glacier. At days end, arrive in the charming town of Jasper. Forest Park Resort - 2 nights (FB)
Day 5
Maligne Canyon & Cruise
Originally a tiny railway town, Jasper is very different from the alpine resort style glamour of Banff. Surrounded by towering mountains, crystal clear lakes, and abundant wildlife and located within Jasper National Park, it is a designed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Start the day with a short tour of the Jasper townsite before crossing the Athabasca River and driving along the eastern slope of the Rockies. Stop for a gentle walk along the edge of Maligne Canyon. The scenic drive continues to beautiful Maligne Lake, the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. The rest of the afternoon is free to enjoy Jasper. We'll celebrate the beauty of Jasper National Park tonight with dinner and a wildlife presentation. (FB,D)
Day 6
Calgary
Our first stop of the day will be at the thundering Athabasca Falls where we'll have a unique opportunity to view the falls from a variety of spectacular locations. Next, we climb up the rugged Sunwapta Pass to the Columbia Icefields and view several glistening glaciers not seen on the northbound journey. A great opportunity to watch for Mountain Goats, Elk, Moose and Bears. View the majestic Bow Glacier. As we leave the Icefield Highway and join the Trans-Canada Highway, we'll take a lunch break in Lake Louise Village. As we pass the majestic Three Sisters Mountain peaks we take our last view of the Majestic Rocky Mountains. On the outskirts of Calgary, we'll catch a glimpse of the 1988 Winter Olympic site including the Ski Jumps, and the Bobsled and Luge run. This evening we'll enjoy a final dinner together. (FB,D)
